I agree with many criticisms: that it was grim dark just for the sake of it, that the Vong as a whole just didn't work in the SW universe (which I guess was kinda the point, but still), and most importantly, that the revolving door of writers involved with the series made the series feel VERY uneven at times. But when I reread them a few years later as I was entering college, I found myself disliking them, though never outright hating the series like many others. But then, I was entering middle school, so it was basically the perfect thing series for an angsty pre-teen to love because the dark and grittiness made it seem so mature to my eyes. Basically, this is the EU series that more or less brought Star Wars universe forward from the optimistic 90s to the dark and gritty 00s, for the good and bad (many would say bad) that entailed.Īs for me? I remember LOVING this series when it came out. There's torture, horrific human experimentation, mass death on a scale never before seen in the EU (the last book calculates that some several hundred TRILLIONS were killed during the war). The very first book kills off Chewbacca, and later Anakin Solo (Han and Leia's 3rd child in the old EU) is also killed. The main villains were the Yuuzhan Vong, an extragalactic race of S&M aliens that looked like the bastard love children of Pinhead and the Dark Elves from Warhammer 40k.

It was considerably darker than any previous EU story. It also was and possibly remains THE most controversial storyline of the old EU. In the coming conflagration, Jaina will be fighting not for victory or vengeance, but for her very being. For those of you who forgot (or are too young), The New Jedi order was the Old EU (now Legends) big post-RotJ storyline from 1999-2003. Grief-stricken and obsessed with revenge, Jaina is blind to these threats-and to the overpowering evil dangerously close to consuming her. Even more sinister are the intentions of the Yuuzhan Vong, desperate to capture Jaina for a hideous sacrifice. With the enemy in hot pursuit, Jaina is forced to seek haven in the unprotected, unfriendly Hapes Cluster, where the Jedi are held responsible for a past tragedy-and where the royal family has grim plans for their famous Jedi guest. In a daring getaway, hotshot pilot Jaina Solo stole an enemy ship, taking along her fellow survivors-and leaving behind a huge piece of her heart. Though the Jedi strike force completed its deadly mission into Yuuzhan Vong territory, the price of success was tragedy: not everyone made it out alive. The New Jedi Order continues as Jaina Solo struggles with anger and despair after the Jedi Knights’ harrowing adventure behind enemy lines.
